wake! she’s got to go!
old dog frolics in the snow
a shimmering moon!

needles pierce the dark
wings of silvery snowflakes
thread of window light

morning winter breeze
the front door melts -shivering
an Owl’s morning call

a glow in the fog
golden melancholy tone
last of autumn waves

snowflakes to rain drops
lonely hum suddenly a swarm
slippery sidewalks!

void of snow and rain
leafless tree trunk and branches
in late autumn prayer

rain drops to snowflakes
swarm quivers to lonely hum
sidewalk shadows shift

a frothy ground swell
swollen roots in the shallows
of dry river’s wake

We started up the trailhead, leaving our car alone in the parking lot. We walked single file, you in front, as we weaved our way though leafless branches stuck in winter’s shadow heavy with autumn rain. It was quiet. The only sound was the crunch our feet on fallen leaves and sticks scattered on the wood chip path. The day was unusually warm, but it felt cool under the weight of thicket’s canopy. We reached the edge of south hill’s shadow into the warm wind and sun; you reached out to hold my hand.

out-stretched rigid wings
wind weaves; feather folds shiver
her whispering cry

meandering sky
drinks in the shadowy folds
twist of white willow

from her white hat -drip!
rolls down the curve of…
-drip!

brittle faded leaf
colors drawn into gray waves
sheen skims dry river

in the autumn glow
galloping on the prairie
plumes of goldenrod

sprinkle of snowflake
alight on thorny branches
autumn rose in bloom

dripping with autumn
sunflower’s sunshine shadow
footsteps pass -plashing!

leaves ride waves of grass
reflecting light weaving though
the gray autumn skies

in the old shed plank
dripping in the marsh pond fog
floats the mid-day moon
